Introduction

We are so glad that you have chosen to join the Camp George community! Our community is more than just a summer home. Being part of Camp George means being part of a tight-knit, supportive community defined by a culture of caring and kindness.

This page will serve as one of your primary resources as we prepare for the summer together. Information on this page will be updated as the summer gets closer and summer details become clearer.

Our mission statement

We are guided by our mission which states that URJ Camp George is a Reform Jewish camp that nurtures Jewish identity, knowledge and values through a fun and immersive summer camp experience that transforms lives, building community within and beyond its borders.

We strive always to maintain and grow Camp George as a safe space where we respect and celebrate everyone’s ways of identifying themselves, as we are all made b’tzelem Elohim, in the image of God.

Our Goals

Camp meets its mission through various elements of camp life. Every member of the community helps us successfully impart the following:

SUPPORT – AHAVA
We respect and celebrate everyone’s ways of identifying themselves. We collaborate with families and staff to meet all needs that we can. We provide support through our community-care approach which considers age, developmental stage, social and emotional wellbeing, financial need, dietary requirements, as well as abilities, exceptionalities, and preferences. Intensive staff training, high ratio of staff to campers, and professional faculty involvement are all a standard part of our program.

JEWISH LIFE – RUACH
We are guided by the mission and values of the Union for Reform Judaism. We celebrate Jewish life by providing an immersive educational experience through experiential programs, worship, music, ritual and Hebrew language. We value social justice and provide hands-on opportunities for campers and staff to be responsible for each other and the world around them. We support Israel and work to ensure that Israel is diverse, pluralistic, and open to progressive Jewish ideals.

PROGRAM – KOACH
We provide a diverse program, with a rich Jewish experience, for all campers, with a focus on Athletics, Waterfront, Adventure, Outdoor Tripping, and the Arts. We believe in and support a balance between progressive skill development, cooperative group building, and recreational enjoyment. The cabin group is at the core of the camp experience. Complementing this experience are advanced individual choice options for older campers, as well as unit and camp wide programs which enrich the daily offerings, provide memorable experiences, and help build spirit in the community.

COMMUNITY – KEHILAH
We extend our community life outside the summer months through active programming, volunteer engagement, and partnerships with numerous agencies including the URJ and NFTY (our Reform youth movement). Our values and ruach (spirit) are woven into our daily lives. As a community, we welcome individuals and families of all makeups – interfaith, single, same-sex, biracial, inter-generational, and beyond.

REPAIRING THE WORLD – TIKKUN OLAM
We consider healing the world a central tenet of our philosophy and practice. As individuals who are created b’tzelem Elohim, in God’s image, we place importance in doing work that assists our community both at camp and with our neighbours. Everyone in our community plays a role in tikkun olam – volunteers and lay leaders, families, staff, and campers. Through year-round social action projects, camp wide events, connections with our local summer community, and day-to-day responsibilities at camp, we learn and practice acts of loving kindness.
