L’dor vador: A Magical Place, by Laura Wolfson

My parents met when they were children, but didn’t get to know one another well until they were at summer camp in the 1940s. It was right here on this property, that is now URJ Camp George, that their friendship grew into a loving, life-long partnership: 62 years of marriage, 4 children, and 4 grandchildren. When we were kids, they made sure to give all of us the opportunity to experience Jewish summer camp for ourselves.

But it was only after they passed away that we realized how very special their camp days were to them, because even after they had downsized – by selling their house and moving to an apartment, and then again to a retirement home where their space was extremely limited and they had to give away almost all of their belongings, we found they had still held onto their childhood camp memorabilia: banners, camp shirts, and photographs.

I’ve been a proud member of the Camp George Faculty since 1999, and my parents were tickled pink about that. How thrilled and proud they would be if they knew that their granddaughter (my daughter Hannah) would also become the Jewish Education Director!

This magical place has been a home for my family for 4 generations (my mother’s twin sister’s great-grandchildren are here right now too!)

We wouldn’t have it any other way. L’Dor vador!
