What’s Up Camp George! We’re so excited to be announcing the latest addition to our Full-Time Team, our new Assistant Director, Jared Kaminsky. We asked Jared a few questions to help our community get to know him. Have a read below, and we can’t wait for you to meet him up on Maple Lake this summer!
Jared, tell us a little bit about your camping background!
I am a huge camp person, having spent 12 summers at camp as a camper, camp counsellor, and canoe tripper. Camp was incredibly impactful for me, inspiring my love of nature, learning new skills, and connecting with lifelong friends. This will be my first summer at Camp George! Fun fact – My wife and I were actually married in the beit tefillah at Camp George in the summer of 2018. It was so magical to have our ceremony in such a beautiful and spiritual setting.
Tell us about your education and work experience
I’ve always had a love of adventure. I did my undergraduate degree in business at Dalhousie University. When not studying, I took every opportunity to explore the beautiful maritimes on my bike or hiking on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Since childhood, I’ve cared deeply about protecting the environment. This inspired me to work in the environmental field over the last 5 years. My most recent position was as the Assistant Director for Shoresh, helping to educate the Jewish community on being ‘Shomrei Adamah’, protectors of the earth. I was involved in running a community garden that donated all of the vegetables that were grown to community members in need. Environmental sustainability is a Jewish value and responsibility. I’m excited to work with campers to create a healthier, greener future.
What’s the thing you’re most excited about at Camp George?
I’m really looking forward to experiencing the special programs and Jewish services that make the Camp George community so unique. The ropes course also looks amazing and I can’t wait to try it out!
What are you looking forward to bringing to Camp?
As the Assistant Director, I want to make sure that everyone has the best summer possible. My goal is to make sure the specialty programs are safe and offer campers opportunity to have fun and face new challenges. I’m especially excited to bring my wilderness skills to enhance programming and help campers connect to the land. I would love to show you how to start a fire using flint, or identify the trees that live at camp.
Tell us a bit about what you like to do outside of camp
Being a new parent is a big part of my life. I have a 10 week old baby daughter named Leira. She is so adorable and has recently started to smile when we play with her. My wife Ayla and our daughter Leira will be part of the Camp George family this summer! Besides being a dad, I also spend my time playing hockey, cooking, yoga, and board games.
We’re so excited to have Jared as part of our team, join us in welcoming him!
