Each season, two of our summer staff are honoured with the prestigious Sam Award. This award, which was named in honour of past benefactor and committee chair Sam Reisman, was first given in 2007. It is presented to two Camp George staff members who best exemplify the embodiment of Jewish values, dedication, hard work and the performance of good deeds. Our staff members have the opportunity to nominate their peers, and the final awards are voted on by our summer leadership team.

In addition to having their names inscribed on a plaque in our camp office, our winners are invited to sit on our Camp Committee and choose a charitable organization of their choice which camp donates to in their honour.

This summer, we were thrilled when Jess Star and Sam Gencher were honoured as our Sam award winners. Today we’re sharing more about the charitable organization that Jess has chosen to donate to:

I would love to contribute to We Charity. I had the amazing opportunity of traveling to Kenya to build a school this summer through Me to We (a branch of We Charity). This organization is so committed to making sustainable changes in communities while also empowering people of all ages, around the world to make a change. I got to see firsthand the projects they have done in Kenya including building a hospital, countless schools, farms and providing clean water to many communities. Me to We is unlike other organizations because the goal is not to make money, like other “voluntourism” trips. Instead, they provide jobs for community members year round. They work to assist communities in terms of opportunities for community members, food security, safe water, education and health because these 5 components are essentials when trying to break the cycle of poverty. We charity also holds “We Day” events all around the world to inspire others to make a change and to think about others. I thinks it’s pretty clear that I’m super passionate about this organization because they truly work on making the world a better place by creating sustainable changes around the world!
