By Rose, a C.I.T. camper

Last year, Pride Shabbat was my first experience with being active in the LGBTQ+ community. I felt overwhelming love and support from my camp community- whether it was people coming to me and asking questions and trying to learn more, or dancing to anthems like “Tel Aviv,” or dressing up for the rainbow picture.

Pride Shabbat is important for everyone at camp. It’s important for non-LGBTQ+ people who don’t know a lot and want to learn more, as well as being incredibly meaningful to LGBTQ+ campers and staff as it shows them they are welcome and safe in the camp community, and that camp is a place in which they are able to celebrate their identities. It demonstrates to all campers and staff the intersectionality of Judaism and LGBTQ+ and how they can relate to each other as minorities as well as through their sacred values.

This year, I am once again helping with Pride Shabbat. I am so happy for the opportunity to instil the same feeling in campers that was was instilled in me, and to carry on this new Camp George tradition of acceptance and love.

All of us at Camp George are looking forward to celebrating this session’s Pride Shabbat beginning tomorrow evening.
