As we go through the final workshops of staff training and as we put the finishing touches on cabin signs and decorations, our staff took time to reflect on the past week of learning and preparing for the arrival of our first campers of 2018.

What did you learn during staff week?

“I learned that it’s okay to ask for help when you need it, and it’s normal to be overwhelmed!” – Sarah Gervais (Drama Specialist)

“I learned how to meet new people in different ways!” – Sivan Lavie (Communications Specialist/Mishlachat)

“This year we spent a lot more time talking about mental health, self care, and stress management. I think we all took away a lot more concrete strategies on how to better take care of ourselves and each other this summer.” – Rebekah Houpt (Community Care Assistant)

What are you most excited about when the campers get here?

“I’m excited for all of the new and fun programs, and to bond with the campers!” – Sarah Swartz (Arts & Crafts Specialist)

“I’m excited to be staff for the first time!” – Yael Morais (Drama Specialist/Songleader)

“I’m excited for swim tests!!” – Sharon Cole (Head of Swim)

“I’m excited to meet all the campers, and for the music and dances!” – Ido Mordechay (Kochavim Counselor/Mishlachat)

“I’m excited because we have created some really cool programs to do with the campers! I think we’re going to have an awesome summer together, and I hope that the kids can learn a lot from me, as I learn in a new role as a teacher!” – Eszther Varadi (Camp Craft Specialist)

What were your favourite staff week programs and workshops?

“My favourite program was with Pam Schuller, where we got to learn all about inclusion!” – Julia Helfman (Kochavim Assistant Unit Head)

“I loved the carnival! The games, inflatables, and food were great, and it was awesome getting to spend time having fun with all of the staff!” – Jesse Agate (Bikes Specialist)

“I really liked the meltdown carnival, which is where we rotated to different stations and learned about health and safety. I especially liked the fire safety station with a smoke room!” – Jordan Notkin (Facilities Director)

“One of my favourite workshops was led by Canvas, where we learned more about understanding diversity in sexuality, and the importance of consent to ensure that every camper and staff member has a safe and positive space to be themselves at camp!” – Daniel Marin, AKA Costa (Kochavim Unit Head)
