Summer 2017 is getting closer! In the mean time, I’d like to introduce you to Shir – one of our summer 2017 staff who is a Shinshinim in Toronto right now.
Shinshinim, are Israeli’s who are completing what’s called a “Year of Service” before entering the Israeli army. Instead of going directly to the army after high school, these emissaries come to Toronto and work in the Jewish community, teaching students about Israeli life and culture and of course about Hebrew! At the end of the school year, the Shinshinim are placed at a Jewish summer camp to complete their Year of Service.Check out my interview with Shir below!
Jane HK: Where in Israel are you from?
Shir: “I’m from Kfar Saba, a city in the center of Israel, near Tel Aviv.”
Where’s one place in Israel everyone should visit?
Shir: “The beaches of Israel!”
Jane HK: Where are you working in Toronto and what’s the best part of your job?
Shir: “Associated Danilack, Beth Emeth synagogue and Beth Tikvah Synagogue. The best part of my job is delivering my speech on Shabbat at the shul, it’s basically five minutes of me talking about any topic that I choose, that is related to Israel.”
Jane HK: What are your hobbies?
Shir: “I like reading books, I used to play the piano. I used to be a gymnast.”
Jane HK: What has surprised you about living in Toronto?
Shir: “The fact that everyone in the community is really warm and caring, and that although Toronto has hundreds of thousands of Jewish people, everyone knows everyone.”
Jane HK: What has it been like living with your host families?
Shir: “It’s the best experience of this year! The families are amazing! It really is like my family and my home away from home.”
Jane HK: Have you ever been to or worked at a camp before? (If yes) What was your favourite part of the experience?
Shir: “I have been to a camp in the U.S when I was in grade 7 and 8. The entire 2 months was the best experience itself! I liked the lake the most..”
Jane HK: What’s your favourite food that you’ve tried in Canada?
Shir: “Maple syrup.”
Jane HK: What Israeli food do you miss the most?
Shir: “Israeli salad!!!”
Jane HK: What are you most looking forward to about coming to camp this summer?
Shir: “Looking forward to getting to know the reform part of Judaism better.”
See you on Maple Lake Shir!
