Why Our Kids Have To Get Back To George!

We are the Katzen Family from West Bloomfield Michigan and Jane HK asked us to write a blog so here it goes!

My name is Tracey Katzen.  I am married to Jeff and we have 3 kids Jared 12, Brett 9 and Cami 6.  I decided long before I even had kids that they would go to a URJ camp (Camp George is where most Michigan kids go if they attend a Union camp.) When I was in college, I worked at Camp Eisner in Massachusetts.  It was wonderful to work there; the emphasis on Jewish living was amazing.  I loved watching the campers embrace their Jewish identities; it was cool to be a Jew.

This summer will be Jared’s 5th summer and Brett’s 3rd summer.  What keeps them going back? The Camp George spirit.  The special friendships they have made and the wonderful counselors that made them feel accepted and loved keeps them coming back.  Plus all the activities like basketball, swimming (Brett’s favorite), the most beautiful waterfront ever, Maccabiah and so much more.

Just by going to overnight camp a child gains self-confidence, responsibility, chance to learn new skills, sharing, living with others, accepting differences and so much more.  Camp George adds to that a warm nurturing environment that instills a love of Judaism and Jewish Values.  At Camp George, campers and staff live Jewishly not just on Shabbat.    As a parent who could ask for anything MORE!!!

What Jared Says About Camp:

I have met many kids at camp from a lot of different places.  I have done Maccabiah and L.A.R.P (Live Action Role Play) and Island Adventures with them. Camp is where friends become part of your memories. Great Memories!  I can’t wait to get back to George to make new and more memories than ever before. I get to be in a new unit with a new bedtime, and more choices.  It is all around the corner.  I CANNOT WAIT to get back to George.

What Brett Says About Camp:

The 1st year is sometimes hard but once you get to know Camp George it is great! I love going to Camp because you meet kids from Michigan, New York and Canada.  Last Year I had a specialist in my bunk and he was extremely caring and kind.  The lifeguards teach you a lot! Last year I passed level 9.  (My swim teacher was Josh.) I am excited to come back to see my friends and the great staff.  Camp George ROCKS!
